Alan Bickers, chairman of Rotorua Lakes Council's tourism business unit, Destination Rotorua, has announced his retirement from the board to pursue other interests.

Mr Bickers said Destination Rotorua had exceeded its performance targets for economic growth through tourism, over the past year.

"This is largely attributable to the Famously Rotorua marketing campaign, and the excellent support we've received from our local tourism industry partners.

"We're now well positioned to continue that progress and reinstate Rotorua as the premier North Island tourist centre, and as a highly desirable place to live, work and play," Mr Bickers said.

Council chief executive Geoff Williams paid tribute to Mr Bickers and thanked him for his service to Rotorua.

"Alan has made a significant contribution to Destination Rotorua and has ably led the board during what's been a challenging but remarkably successful period," he said. "We're extremely fortunate to have had his valuable guidance as the inaugural chair of the Destination Rotorua board."

Mr Williams said an announcement on the appointment of a replacement chairman was expected within the next few days.
