The Desert Rd has reopened this morning after being closed for several hours following a serious crash overnight.

A person was left with serious injuries after a crash between a car and a pedestrian on State Highway 1 on the Desert Rd about 10pm yesterday, a police spokeswoman said.

The road was closed for about nine hours before reopening and was set to be closed again later this morning for crash investigators to visit the scene, she said.

The pedestrian received serious injuries and a helicopter from Taupō took the person to Palmerston North hospital, a St John spokeswoman said.

The incident happened between Paradise Valley Rd and Access 18, near the Waiouru Military area.
