The area on Lake Taupo's lakefront where a woman died.
An elderly woman has died after getting into difficulty in Lake Taupo, despite efforts by two runners to keep her alive.
Sergeant Stu Duncan of Taupo police said two people running at the lakefront near the Lake Tce/Taharepa Rd intersection saw the woman in the water about 9.50am today. The
runners thought she appeared to be in difficulty so went to her aid and also called an ambulance.
One of the runners was a paramedic from Havelock North, and the other an occupational therapist so they were able to provide immediate help and spent time trying to resuscitate her.
The actual circumstances of how she ended up in the water and what caused the woman's death are being investigated by police.
"We're reasonably happy there's nothing suspicious about it and obviously we're still working on the exact cause,'' Mr Duncan said.
