OPINION
Slow down. Take a breath. Be patient. Is it worth getting this worked up over?

These are things worth thinking about in many aspects of life but today I'm referring to a driver's desperation to pass the person in front of them.

When did we become so impatient?

This week I wrote an article based on speeding statistics from New Zealand Police.

In the Taupō policing area, between 2010 and 2019, there was an average of 12,713 speeding offences recorded per year. That's more than 1000 per month - and that's only the people who got caught.

It blows my mind that so many people are willing to exceed the speed limit, knowing how big the consequences will be if they crash.

The emergency services, the people on the front line attending car accidents, tell us every year that the results of a crash, the injuries, are so much more devastating when excessive speed is a factor.

Accidents do happen. I don't care if you're Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton, you never know when someone else might drift into your lane or fly through an intersection and hit you. If you are speeding when this happens, you will suffer the consequences.

When I was a young man I would get frustrated too. If someone was driving slower than I wanted to go, I would drive right up behind them constantly trying to find a way past.

However, as I've matured, I've realised driving is a lot more enjoyable if I just relax. I've also covered enough car crashes as a reporter, many of them fatal, to know it's just not worth the risk.

If you do find yourself tailgating a slow driver and getting wound up, I suggest you pause to consider why that person might be driving slow.

Perhaps they are not as confident as you are. They may have been involved in a crash themselves or lost a family member in an accident. Seeing you up close in the rear vision mirror could be extremely intimidating.

As we head into Christmas and the roads get busier, let's just calm down a bit and make sure we all arrive safely.
