A driver heading home to Rotorua captured a close call on his dashcam when a car crossed the centre line on January 11.

More dashcam footage has emerged capturing a “crazy” near-miss where an overtaking car forces oncoming traffic to swerve on to the gravel.

The video, shared with the Herald, shows the moment the car swerves across the centre line and drives on the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing oncoming traffic.

The driver with the dashcam, who did not want to be named, told the Herald he and other drivers had to take evasive action to avoid a serious crash on the busy highway.

He said the incident occurred just out of Hatepe near Tūrangi on Saturday.

“I just got past the passing lanes up the top of the road ... then as I was driving I saw this car and I was thinking in my head, ‘What’s this car up to'?

“I realised it was on our side of the road ... I pulled over as it was going past and I looked back in the mirror and saw behind me people had to swerve off to the left.”

There was gravel on the side of the road, and “thankfully enough” to avoid crashing into the oncoming vehicle, he said.

“It was quite a crazy thing to experience, especially coming back after a long drive from a big job,” the driver said.

It follows another incident in the North Island where a truck overtook a vehicle on the wrong side of the road.

The incident, which occurred on the Kaimai Range, is being investigated by the police.

The dashcam footage posted online gained more than 150 comments, with some calling the move “dangerous” and “shocking”.
