Organisers of the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge are excited at the introduction of the Lakesider - a new 16km recreational ride - to this year's line-up of events.
New Zealand's largest cycling event is best known for the Bike Barn Solo, a one-lap 160km circumnavigation of Lake Taupo.
Eventdirector Kay Brake said with many New Zealanders now enjoying the wonderful cycle trails on offer around the country, they wanted to introduce something accessible to everyone, while offering the opportunity to be fully engaged with the event experience.
"There's even the chance to win some great prizes including an all-new Holden Trax car," she said.
The Lakesider travels from Two Mile Bay in Taupo, along the lake's Great Lake Walkway, with its picture-book views of Lake Taupo and the mountains beyond, before rejoining the other event riders at Five Mile Bay and sharing the journey back to the finish line.
"We believe the Lakesider will be attractive to the recreational cyclist, children who may be too old for the Kids@Heart 5km ride, but not quite yet up to taking on the full lap of the lake. And also for supporters who want to take part in their own cycle ride while their mates or loved ones are participating in one of our other event categories."
With 15 event categories on offer, on and off road, this year's Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge will celebrate its 37th anniversary on Saturday November 30.
