Rotorua residents can help keep families warm and people out of hospital by just giving up a fraction of their time each week.

Curtainbank Rotorua is in need of more volunteers, with its doors opening for 2018 on March 5.

Curtainbank Rotorua trustee Crystaline Bennett says it accepts pre-loved, clean curtains from the public.

They are then gifted to families and the elderly who are in need of warmth and privacy for their homes.

The volunteers would help with sorting, measuring and filing the curtains, and putting aside ones which need cleaning.

She says the charitable trust has a steam cleaner, and Best Dry Cleaners and Tendercare Laundry do a set for them every week.

Crystaline says the trust only gives out curtains by referrals from doctors, health workers or social workers.

"We are always in need of curtains coming in because we give them out very fast."

Curtains are sent to homes to areas as far as Murupara and Minginui, she says.

They had even done a house lot which was put on a ship to Pitcairn Island.

Crystaline says curtains which are not suitable to give out to homes are given to the fire brigade, as they can be used to help train fire fighters on how different fabrics burn.

Having some knowledge of how curtains are hung and measured is essential for volunteers, she says.

Busy past year for Curtainbank Rotorua

"We are a friendly bunch and we have a luncheon every now and again to get together and relax."

She says health workers send the Curtainbank letters about how helpful it has been for people and families.

"It's so wonderful because they say it stops babies getting asthma and everyday colds, and helps keep people out of hospital and keeps homes warm.

"Keeping people warm is the main thing."

The Energy Efficiency Commission was established by the Labour Government in about 2008 and this led to the Healthy Homes initiative with Curtainbanks being set up all over the country.

People can get in touch by messaging the Curtainbank Rotorua Facebook page, or texting or calling Crystaline on (027) 2000 926.
