Cricket: Greerton state their intent

Defending Baywide Cup champions Greerton made an emphatic statement in the 2015 title race when they comprehensively defeated Williams Cup champions Mount Maunganui.

The second round of the Baywide Cup was played over the weekend across the Bay.

Greerton batted first on the artificial surface at Waipuna Park, with Bay of Plenty master blaster Brett Hampton anchoring his side's big score of 292/7.

Hampton struck the ball with real confidence to post 104, before he was caught and bowled by Dale Swan.

The Greerton batsman's century was the launching pad for Shane Wineti and Tommy Clout to blast the ball to the boundary ropes in the last few overs.

Clout smashed six sixes, including four off five balls, to reach 45 not out.

While Mount Maunganui made a measured start to chasing the big target, Greerton quick Dan Spencer caused havoc with the ball to see the Mount side bowled out for just 95.

Spencer returned bowling figures of 6/24.

In Rotorua, the Otumoetai Cadets had a quick trip to the city to play Bay of Plenty Indian Sports at Boord Park. Indian Sports batted first and were removed for 101. Cadets allrounder Ben Christensen, who blasted a century last weekend, was in good form with the ball, taking four wickets for 34.

The Cadets strolled to victory without losing a wicket.

In the other premier game, Te Puke joined Greerton and Cadets on maximum points after two rounds of the Cup. They comfortably defeated Tauranga Boys' College at the Te Puke Domain by 142 runs.

Bay of Plenty Indians 101 (Parry Kulaar 35; Ben Christensen 4/34, Lou Brooks 3/29) lost to Otumoetai Cadets 102/0 (Sean Davies 76no, Tom Boorman 24no).

Greerton 292/7 (Brett Hampton 104, Shane Wineti 53, Tommy Clout 45no, Sean Dykes 45) defeated Mount Maunganui 95 (Ben Musgrave 28; Dan Spencer 6/24).

Te Puke 222 (Jonty Grigson 63, Matt Dwight 46, Christian MacDonald 41; Gurwinder Singh 6/25) defeated Tauranga Boys' College 80 (Tim Clarke 30; C MacDonald 4/12, Alex Gooding 3/40).
