Cricket: Central Club bounce back in style

Central Cricket Club have made amends for their disappointing first-round loss after beating Greerton in round two of the Williams Cup.

Central posted 228/8 against Eves Realty Greerton at Greerton headquarters, despite losing three wickets off the last three balls of their turn at bat.

Ryan Pedley (56), Johnny Barrow (48) and Kyle Blanchard (38) performed well with the bat for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Dan Spencer was the best of the Greerton bowlers taking 3/64.

In reply, Greerton batsmen Shane Wineti (32), Pip Thickpenny (31) and Logan Dench (26) got good starts but Greerton were eventually removed for 174.

Jason Trembath and Vaughan Blanchard did the damage with the ball, taking three wickets apiece.

Captain Trembath will be happy with his side's efforts after failing to chase down 103 runs against Mount Maunganui last weekend.

Meanwhile, the Rotorua-based Bay of Plenty Indians picked up their second loss of the Williams Cup on Saturday.

City Sports Bar Te Puke were too good for the Indians in Rotorua, posting 226 all out.

Tai Bridgman-Raison top-scored with a crisp 36 in an innings where most of the Te Puke batsmen got starts.

But the match belonged to the Te Puke bowlers, who bundled the Rotorua side out for 70.

Raminder Singh bowled line and length to take four wickets for just 17 runs.

The battle of the bridge at the Tauranga Domain on Saturday resulted in a comfortable win to Element IMF Otumoetai Cadets, who defeated defending champions Mount Maunganui.

Cadets reached 245/5, while the Mount were removed for 162.

Whakatane United showed their potential by producing an outstanding all-round performance defeating Tauranga Boys' College by seven wickets.

Alex Yates (4/20) and Stephen Ford (3/41) took the majority of the Tauranga students' wickets as they were dismissed for 186.

The Eastern Bay side's victory was a walk in the park, with Tom Yates top-scoring with an unbeaten 58.

After two rounds, only two teams sit at the top of the standings with unbeaten records, Te Puke and Cadets.
