Rotorua has chance to win back Attrill Cup on Sunday.

Rotorua's top premier cricket players will chase cup glory this weekend as they go toe to toe with Tauranga.

The second round of the Bay Cup is being played tomorrow followed by the first round of the Attrill Cup on Sunday.

Rotorua's two premier cricket clubs - Central and Bay of Plenty Indians - will merge to create a Rotorua representative side to play in the Attrill Cup.

Rotorua captain Jason Trembath said they had named a strong team to contest the cup.

"Basically we've split selection between the two clubs ... the Indians will fill four positions and Central will take the remaining seven spots.

"On paper we look very positive, we have a good team."

He said it had been about four years since Rotorua last won the cup but they should come close to bringing it home this year.

Rotorua will play their first round-robin match against cup-holders Tauranga (Greerton, Otumoetai Cadets, and Tauranga Boys' College players) on Sunday in Tauranga.

The Attrill Cup has been contested in the Bay of Plenty since before 1938.

Meanwhile, the Bay Cup heats up tomorrow as Central and the Bay of Plenty Indians go in search of their first victories.

Both teams will play their second round matches away against stiff competition.

Central captain Trembath said they were looking to bat out more overs this weekend against Mount Maunganui.

Central only managed 94 runs last weekend against Otumoetai Cadets but were boosted by a good performance from their bowling attack.

"I think we will stick to the same sort of plan in terms of fielding and bowling and will look to bat the 60 overs out," he said.

"The fight we showed [last weekend] in the second innings was good to see."

Central fans will be happy to hear a talented, young English batsman joined the team mid-week after flying in from overseas.

Trembath said they also had another experienced batsman from Rotorua returning to the top order for the match.

The side will be up against the likes of Mount Maunganui slow bowler Dale Swan who took six wickets for just 11 runs against the Indians last weekend.

The Indians, who struggled last weekend, will face off against Te Puke tomorrow afternoon.

The Rotorua-based side will be looking to improve on their performance when they travel to Te Puke Domain.

In other matches tomorrow in the Bay Cup, Otumoetai Cadets host East Bay United (Whakatane) and Greerton host Tauranga Boys' College.

All games start at 11am.
