State Highway 36 between Tauranga and Rotorua has been reopened after a crash earlier today.

The collision between a car and truck happened about 11.15am, between Keenan Road and Merrick Road.

Both lanes were blocked but traffic was being let through at 12pm.

Western Bay of Plenty head of road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said no one had been seriously injured but still warned people to delay their travel or avoid the area.

"Police are trying to get the recovery tow service providers to the scene as soon as possible to open up SH36," Mr Campion said.

"But at this stage, given the traffic, there are already delays and my advice if people want to use SH36 is to delay their trip. Or, if they are heading to Rotorua, to go over the Kaimais on SH29 and come back around through the Mamakus or go around on the Tauranga Eastern Link out through Okere Falls on Sh33."

Mr Campion recommended Tauranga-bound traffic already using SH36 use turn off on Te Matai Rd.
