A car crashed into a power pole in Ngongotahā Thursday evening causing a major power outage in the area.

A police spokeswoman said police received a report at 5.50pm and said the power pole and lines had come down.

"Fortunately the driver appears to have only suffered moderate injuries," she said.

Unison spokesperson Danny Gough said 1400 customers in the area were initially affected, but within minutes power was restored to more than 700 homes.

Crews had been working throughout the night to restore power to the remaining homes, and this morning 16 were still without power.
