An engaged couple quite literally took the plunge for their wedding.

Wellington couple, Lenadeen Nikora and Aden Waikari decided to tie the knot on the Taupo Bungy platform this morning, before leaping off it together.

After being together for many years, and knowing each other all of their lives, the couple had planned a Taupo holiday before Christmas and decided to do their first bungy jump.

Nikora said she then thought, "Why don't we just get married at the same time?".

The planning began and they initially thought that immediate family would be joining them, including their three children - Manaia, 14, Brea, 11, and Quintin, 10.

But once word of the plan got around, they thought it apt to have all the aunts and uncles there too.

About 40 family members and friends ended up along the sides of the platform, watching the ceremony and joining in the celebrations.

Tokoroa Marriage Celebrant, Greg Peters, who "hate heights", said it was the most original wedding he'd been a part of.

"I've been to many amazing venues, but this is by far the most unique setting."

The relaxed couple had UB40's Bring Me Your Cup playing as Nikora walked down the aisle, followed by other favourites by Prince Tui Teka and The Hi Marks.

The short ceremony drew a few tears for both the couple and onlookers.

As for the bungy jump - Nikora and Waikari both thought it would be a piece of cake until they got to the edge. The nerves took over and both were a little hesitant.

Celebrating with a glass of champagne afterward, the happy couple left to carry on celebrating with family and friends, before heading to Gisborne for a family Christmas.
