A comedic play bought to the stage by one of Rotorua's budding directors has made it to the finals of a national performance competition.
Bonking James Bond is through to the third and final round of New Zealand TheatreFest, after snagging a number of awards.
The story follows a woman,Betty, played by Robyn-ann Rumney who discovers her husband is having an affair. She decides to win him back by creating an imaginary lover 'James Bond' and along the way her confidence and self-esteem grow.
Her husband thinks she is having an affair and wants her back but Betty has to decide if she still wants him.
At the local level competition in Rotorua, Bonking James Bond went home with Best Overall Production, Best Ensemble Group, Best Director, Most Memorable Moment and Best Female Actress for Ms Rumney.
The cast were put forward to the regional finals held in Maungaturoto where they took out Best Overall Production and Excellence in Acting for Ms Rumney. The cast is made up of local actors Ms Rumney, Lloyd Davies, Sarah Smith and Steve Fisher.
Director Alison Young said New Zealand TheatreFest was a "great place to start as a new director".
"I never expected to get this far in the competition as it was just a bit fun but I am thrilled to be performing at the national finals."
Ms Young said she had 35 years of stage experience but welcomed the new role as director.
"It was always something I wanted to try so when I saw the name of the play I thought it sounded interesting and asked to see the script.
"I'm definitely not ready to give up the stage yet but would like to continue directing and see where it takes me."
Bonking James Bond is one of eight performances competing at the national finals in Wellington later this month and is the only comedy on show. Shambles Theatre will host two shows on September 5 and 6 to fundraise for the finals. Tickets cost $12 and will be on sale from Wednesday at the Shambles Theatre.
