Census figures give iwi snapshot

There are more than 2800 people who affiliate with the Te Arawa tribe of Ngati Rangiwewehi.

According to the latest Census figures, the iwi is made up of 54 per cent women and 45 per cent men, with the median age of 25.9 years.

The figures are part of Statistics New Zealand's iwi profiles, which break down the number of members living throughout the country.

Other key facts of Ngati Rangiwewehi include:

• 25.4 per cent identified Ngati Rangiwewehi as their sole iwi affiliation, while 74.6 per cent were also affiliated with other iwi.

• 31.9 per cent could hold a conversation about everyday things in te reo Maori.

For people aged 15 years and over affiliating with Ngati Rangiwewehi and living in New Zealand on March 5, 2013:

• 44.5 per cent stated that they had never been a regular smoker.

• 73.8 per cent held a formal qualification.

The median income was $24,300.

• 70 per cent living in main urban areas (30,000 or more) were in the labour force.
