It may have been a charity event, but there was no love lost between the fighters at Saturday night's Rotovegas Corporate Fight Night.
Among the celebrities battling it out in the ring to help raise funds for local boxing were former Kiwi Tawera Nikau and Lotto presenter/singer Russell 'The Hitman' Harrison.
Their
entertaining bout ended in a victory for the former league player, although Harrison was a worthy challenger.
Fight Night promoters Tanya and Aaron Warren said they could not have had a better reaction to the event that raised about $4000 for local youth boxing.
"For our first time I think it went pretty well, so we are planning to hold the event again next year," Mr Warren said.
"The behaviour of the general public was excellent as well," he said.
The Warrens run the Rotovegas Boxing Gym from a converted garage at their Owhata home and want to give some of the city's youth an opportunity to further their careers.
"It will give the Rotovegas Boxing Gym a chance to showcase our talented fighters and attend tournaments around New Zealand and in Australia as well," Mrs Warren said.
Former world heavyweight title contender David Tua did his part by handing out trophies to all the winners and also donated some of his personal boxing memorabilia, which was auctioned off on the night.
Ring announcer for the night was Rotorua entertainer and music producer, Rodger Cunningham.
Rotorua deputy mayor Trevor Maxwell, who was at the Rotorua Girls' High School Arena on Saturday for the boxing, was impressed with both the professionalism of the event and the quality of the fights.
"It was all for charity, but some of those guys were not holding back. I thought it was a fantastic night," he said.
"All of the fighters should be congratulated for the hard work they put in and for having the nerve to get into the ring in the first place."
A nervous Rotorua District councillor, Geoff Kenny, said before his fight he was just hoping to get out of the ring in one piece.
He did. Not only that, he won his fight against Rotorua courier driver Kahu Rangiawha, his experience as a former New Zealand Golden Gloves champion winning through in the end.
"I'll retire undefeated now.
"But it was just neat to be able to get through the three rounds.
"I've got a bit of a sore nose where Kahu thumped me at one stage, but apart from that I'm feeling okay, but pretty tired," Mr Kenny said.
In the main event, rugby league legend Nikau beat television personality Harrison, who held his own until the final round, when Nikau landed a few heavy blows, slowing Harrison down enough for him to take the win.
A line-up of six amateur fights preceded the charity boxing event, but the charity fight between Josh Te Kowhai and Jay Mclean had to be called off due to a late injury to Mclean's hand. * FIGHT RESULTS * Tawera Nikau beat Russell 'The Hitman' Harrison
