With a purr and a sip you can relax and unwind at Rotorua's latest cafe.

Rotorua's Rovina Zhang recently visited two cat cafes in Auckland that left her thinking her eight cats could easily bring joy to others, so she is opening her own cafe full of cats.

She said the idea was for people to come in to the Fancy Meow Cat Cafe for a cup of coffee or tea and a cuddle or play.

"We have a lot of rugs and floor sits so the cats can walk around. Currently we are only planning on doing the coffee and the tea and packaged biscuits."

She said hygiene wasn't an issue because the kitchen was at the back of the site in a separate area.

"We are going to have vibrating order numbers, so when it vibrates it means your coffee is in the serving cupboard from the back room so you simply come and pick it up."

Also out the back, separate again, the cats have their own room that only they can access to "do their business", she said.

"I've only got purebreeds at the moment because I wanted puppy-like cats who will interact.

"All the cats are house-trained, I feel the love from these guys, when you come in they walk all around to greet you. They like people and they like to play with people. We think they will bring people joy."

She said the first eight cats all had names but she was expecting six more cats to arrive before the cafe opened on Friday and she was planning on letting some of the public name them.

"I've also made contact with the SPCA as well to see if we could use our place as a fostering home."

Mrs Zhang's husband owns the escape room that will open next door and they were hoping the two businesses would work well together. An escape room is a place where a group works together problem-solving to get out of a locked room.

"We have played all of the escape rooms in Auckland and we thought they were really fun ... that was our original idea, but then we had extra space and I thought it would be great to have a cat cafe."

She said they were hoping the overall experience would be "magic".

      WHERE: 1210 Arawa St, Rotorua.
COST: $15 - includes one person for one hour and a free coffee or tea.
