Car in river closes State Highway 1

A car crashed into a river near Waitahanui.

Two occupants made it out without injury after crashing into a river on State Highway 1 near Taupo.

A police media spokeswoman said a car crashed into a river near Waitahanui shortly after 11.30am today.

She said all occupants made it out of the vehicle safely and police were on route to the scene.

State Highway 1 between Taupo and Turangi was closed for about an hour from 1.30pm so that the car could be salvaged out of the river.
