A car rolled on Rimu St in Rotorua this morning.

A Rotorua street has been cleared after a car flipped near a school this morning.

Police were called to the scene on Rimu St near the intersection of Miller St about 8.32am.

The car was removed from the scene and the road cleared about 9.30am, a police spokeswoman said.

The driver of the car was not at the scene of the crash and had still not been found, she said .

A witness, who preferred not to be named, said he heard a car "screaming" along Totara St.

"I heard a kid scream, saw the car scream past our house, turn right into Miller St on the wrong side of the road. He hit the kerb, nearly hit a kid and flipped the car.

"I saw him almost hit one kid on a bike on Totara St and then another kid here and ended up flipping."

A reporter on the scene said there were a lot of children around, on their way to school.
