When does a cupcake power a car? When it is the start of an SPCA fundraiser.

The annual SPCA Cupcake Day took place yesterday with several hundred cupcakes baked and sold in Rotorua.

The Rotorua SPCA branch decided to use the day to kick-start its fund for a new vehicle.

"Our current vehicle isn't that reliable," said SPCA inspector Jessica Watson.

"It's done its dash and it would be great to get something new. I'm out there every day, I drive 1000km a week following up animal cruelty complaints and educating people on what they need to do.

"It's good when you get to see some positive outcomes."

She said a brand new vehicle which met all SPCA requirements would cost around $50,000. She said they hoped to raise around $10,000 from cupcake day to give them a good start.

"We've had amazing help with hundreds of cupcakes baked. I started piping for the first time for mine but people have made a great effort. It's an amazing feeling of so many people wanting to help us. Everyone wants to see animals looked after."

Cupcakes were sold in City Focus as well as at businesses in the CBD.

There were also cupcakes available for sale at Rotorua Airport.
