A burning people mover was extinguished near Rerewhakaaitu last night.

Firefighters were called to the scene on State Highway 38 just before 9pm.

A fire service spokesman said the van was ablaze and smoke from the fire was drifting across the road, causing a driving hazard.

A police spokeswoman said no one was with the car at the time and they had spoken to the registered owner.

Investigations were continuing, she said.
