Police at the scene where a body found by the Utuhina Stream in Fordlands.

Police say a post mortem examination has now been completed in relation to a man found dead in a Rotorua stream yesterday.

Police say they have a provisional cause of death but more work needs to be carried out to establish the exact circumstances that led to the man's death.

They would not discuss the outcome of the post mortem examination.

Police said it was still too soon to speculate as to whether the man's death was suspicious or not and at this stage it remained an unexplained death.

Police hoped to be able to release details of the man's identity tomorrow once satisfied that his next of kin had been informed.

At that point police would be appealing for assistance from the public to piece together the last movements of the man.

If anyone has any information that might assist police they are asked to contact Rotorua Police on 07 348 0099.

Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
