PLEASANT SURPRISE: Mac's new "tap only" Green Beret IPA is hoppy and fruity with a malty finish.

It's always a good day when beer arrives in the mail. Even better, it was a Monday and I was thirsty.

I was surprised by this beer, and so were plenty of people who have posted their own reviews online about Mac's new offering, the Green Beret IPA.

I'm reminded of Arnold, the Governator, who apparently ate Green Berets for breakfast. Not that I could condone having beer poured over my cereal - I use spirits for that.

MORE FROM 48 HOURS

Mac's (Lion Nathan) have released a range of "tap-only" beers that can be found at all Mac's-themed pubs around the country and from Liquor King's new "growler stations".

I call them flagons, but whatever - a growler is plastic bottle full of beer because they haven't released it in bottles.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised. After four days getting here in the post I was not expecting it to be as fresh and bubbly as it was.

It's a nicely balanced brew and due to no less than two dry hopping procedures has a pleasant, but not overpowering, hoppy fruitiness and a solid malty finish.

At 5.4 per cent it's an easy drinking beer that you could sit on all night.

It's got a lot more flavour than Mac's Hop Rocker and is a great gateway beer for those not used to so much flavour in their beer.

A highly drinkable and pleasant drop - give it a try.

-Beer kindly supplied by The PR Shop and Mac's. Find it at any Mac's Brewbar or Liquor King growler station.
