The beauty industry has always been a highly competitive area. Here in Rotorua the demand for services ranging from lash extensions to waxing is fast increasing. However, with more than a decade up her sleeve, Zarnia Lee of Tuhourangi / Ngati Wahiao has the recipe for success.
In a society
where the notion of beauty is heavily debated, Zarnia holds fast to the belief that beauty first and foremost comes from within. "Beauty will never age. Beauty is within," she says. "It's a great industry to be in. Being able to reassure Maori women to be confident and comfortable with their body."
It started off in Melbourne some years ago where Zarnia had regular beauty treatments that she took a keen interest in the beauty industry. Coming home to Rotorua to start a family she then decided to study a Beauty and Nail technology course. "Once qualified and had 2 years' experience working as an employee, my brother who still currently lives in Melbourne, was the one that planted the seed in my head to pursue in opening my own business," said Zarnia.
That was 11 years ago, and Zarnia still has clients from when she first started. It hasn't always been easy and advises that anyone getting into business to get their head around the tax system, have a good account and take a legitimate sick day when needed.
Over the years Zarnia has seen a steady increase in all ages of not only Maori women but also Maori men, "Brazilian waxing is becoming more popular whilst for males, back, chest and legs are the more sort after treatments."
