Fireworks related calls last night included a large vegetation fire in Papamoa Beach

Bay of Plenty fire brigades attended several fireworks-related calls last night including a large vegetation fire caused by a skyrocket at Pāpāmoa Beach.

The Pāpāmoa Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to the fire at the reserve opposite Gibson Place at 7.17pm.

Pāpāmoa chief fire officer Allan Bicker said the brigade only had one fireworks related call last night.

"Because of the size of the fire, 30 sq m, and its location which was both sides of the drainage reserve we had to attack it from two different angles," Bicker said.

"It took about an hour to put the blaze and we had to call for extra manpower to do so,"

Bicker said the fire was definitely fireworks-related as the brigade members found a skyrocket at the scene.

It was these sorts of incidents which heightened calls for public sales of fireworks to be banned, he said.

A Rotorua Volunteer Fire Brigade spokesman said the brigade received three fireworks-related calls last night.

That included two bonfires but only one had to be put out in Western Heights about 7.40pm because it was "very large", he said.

Mount Maunganui Fire Brigade only attended a small fire in the dunes at the northern end of Mount Maunganui Beach north of the cenotaph about 9pm.
