State Highway 2 in Bay of Plenty has reopened following a fatal crash this morning.

One person died after a logging truck and a car crashed near Waitahuna Lane, Pukehina, around 5am.

Two other people were taken to Tauranga Hospital, one in a serious condition and the other in moderate condition, police and St John ambulance spokespeople have confirmed.

The highway between Otamarakau Valley Rd and Old Coach Rd was closed for several hours but has reopened, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency said in an 11.45am update.

The Serious Crash Unit was examining the scene and inquiries were ongoing, police said.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Josh Pennefather said firefighters attended a crash involving a car and a logging truck in Pukehina this morning.

He said they were called out at 4.59am and found two people trapped.

Pennefather said the two fire trucks sent to the scene have left.
