Bay of Plenty crash: One dead after car crashes into river near Tāneatua

One person has died after a car crashed into a river in the Bay of Plenty.

Emergency services were called to White Pine Bush Rd near Tāneatua about 6.05pm on Tuesday after reports a car had crashed into the Whakatāne River.

Police said this morning that one person died at the scene and a second person was seriously injured.

The road was closed overnight but has since re-opened.

Inquiries into the crash were ongoing, police said.
