Six people have been injured, including one critically, after a crash in Bay of Plenty.

Police were called to a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 2, Waiotahe about 8pm Thursday.

The road was closed near Appleton Rd while the Serious Crash Unit worked at the scene, however, it reopened about 2am, a spokesperson said.

Hato Hone St John said four ambulances, one rapid response unit and one operations manager went to the scene.

One person in a critical condition was taken to Tauranga, and five in moderate condition were taken to Whakatāne by ambulance.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said three trucks – including two rescue vehicles - were sent to the scene.

Firefighters extracted one person trapped in a vehicle.
