Jazz enthusiasts will be toe tapping to modern and traditional swing when the Joe Carbery Swingtet blasts into town on Sunday.
Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Johnny Hodges, Eddie Condon, Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan, Fats Waller, Louis Prima and Gerry Mulligan are a few of the influences they cover and theband has the reputation of filling up a dance floor.
"This group is entirely danceable. They have lots of good variation on swing tunes and people should have a really good time," according to Delight Gartlein, publicity officer for the Rotorua Jazz Club.
"Their special take on swing is adding Latin American rhythms to it."
Joe Carbery began entertaining 40 years ago with a band called the Nite Owls, singing and playing the alto and baritone saxophones, along with Don Hales on drums.
The Swingtet emerged after John Wilcox on piano, Stuart Lawrence with the string bass, and Warwick Simpson on clarinet, oboe, saxophones, and keyboard joined.
Joe Carbery is based in Auckland and the other members are travelling down from the Kaipara this weekend.
The jazz club is open to all members of the public. Doors open at the Arawa Lounge at 4pm as does the cash bar.
