Like many young girls, Bronte Kelly spent her childhood dreaming of becoming a ballerina.
Now, her dream has turned into a reality and the 22-year-old will debut in the lead role of Swanhilda in the Royal New Zealand Ballet's production of Coppelia, at the Rotorua Civic Theatre tonight.
Miss Kellyis one of three dancers playing the role of Swanhilda throughout the ballet company's tour of New Zealand.
Born in Queensland, she started dancing at the age of 4 and went on to train at the Australian Ballet School before joining the RNZB in 2011, performing in Tutus on Tour, Stravinsky Selection and The Sleeping Beauty. She also performed the lead in Cinderella.
But of all the characters she has played, Swanhilda was her favourite, she said.
"She's a character I fell in love with when I was a little girl. She's really cheeky and playful, and even though she's a bit naive at the beginning, she grows and matures throughout the story."
The ballet follows the story of a beautiful life-sized dancing doll, created by Dr Coppelius, who is mistaken for a real girl.
She is so lifelike that the character of Franz becomes infatuated with her and sets aside his true heart's desire, Swanhilda.
