A Rotorua teen with exemplary leadership skills and a passion for sharing her culture has been accepted to attend United World Colleges' Robert Bosch College in Freiburg, Germany.
Te Kura O Te Koutu Year 13 student Ayla Blair-Smith, 17, endured a six-month application and selection process before gaining entry tothe college.
Once she had been accepted, the Auckland Private Education Charitable Trust granted her a two-year scholarship to attend, starting in August.
Ron Finn from Rotary Club of Rotorua North presented her with the scholarship on behalf of the trust at a ceremony this week.
During her time in Germany, Ayla will learn more about cultures around the world, while sharing her own language and culture.
"When we found out she had been one of the few people accepted, we were incredibly surprised and so proud, like any parent would be."
In her application Ayla said whenever there was an opportunity, she jumped at it, "no matter how big or small it is, I will try".
"I like to think that there are no boundaries, and that anyone can achieve what they set their mind to. I am willing to take a risk, and step out of my comfort zone.
"I am interested in learning about different cultures and what others have to offer, along with sharing my own culture.
"I could easily talk of the cultural and strong leadership qualities I would bring to the college, but they are both strong qualities that are a natural part of who I am. The true contribution I stand to make will come from the depth of my heart."
