Athletics: Hard day out for Lake City athletes

Lake City Athletic Club members competing at the New Zealand road championships held at the weekend in Tauranga found out how difficult it is to win a national title.

Despite solid efforts from all club members who competed it was only Trevor Ogilvie who came away with a winning performance.

This came in the masters men's 65 division with Ogilvie again proving he is the best in New Zealand for his age by winning the 10km race in a good time of 38.25 minutes.

Ogilvie led from the start and never gave any of the five runners opposing him a chance.

Lake City runner Tony Broadhead was placed second in the masters men's 45 division after staying with the leading bunch for most of the 10km race.

This was an excellent effort as it was only over the last 500m that he lost ground on the eventual winner, Grant McLean (Wellington). Broadhead's time was 34m 30s.

Adrian Lysaght came fifth in the masters men's 35 (34m 55s), while Steven O'Callaghan came 10th in the senior men's race in 31m 46s.

In the women's events, it was left up to Kathy Howard to produce the best local placing. This came in the master's women's 60 division with Howard taking out third place over 5km in a time of 25m 29s.

Club mate Christine Kerrison was placed fourth in the same division in 28m 45s.
