A person has been arrested after a police chase in Whakatāne.

A police spokeswoman said a vehicle of interest allegedly failed to stop for police about 11.20am in Whakatāne central.

The vehicle was pursued to the Awatapu area, where the driver allegedly dumped the car and ran off.

A person was then allegedly seen taking another vehicle, which was chased towards the Matahina Dam. The vehicle was spiked and the driver allegedly dumped it near the corner of Galatea and Cross Rds.

A person was tracked by dogs and arrested.
