The Arts Village has pulled together a smaller version of Art in the Park on a shoestring budget of $700.
The village team were devastated to have to cancel their annual Art in the Park event — which has been run in February for 22 years — last month due to bad weather.
"It was so hard on our team as we had been working on this since August," says The Arts Village manager Mary-Beth Acres. "We had a real mixed reaction from the community as some of them would have been there rain or shine. Unfortunately, the worst thing about it was, it ended up being sunny!"
But their team and some stallholders have been "doing miracles" and using the remaining $700 left in the kitty have pulled together a Pop-Up Arts Festival at the village this weekend instead.
The event will have all the music, food, stalls and entertainment that were destined for the original day including 40 stall holders but in a smaller time frame. Acres says the Pop-Up Arts Festival will still have all the amazing live bands. Stallholders include wood work, artwork, clothing, jewellery, glasswork and much more. There is a free kids drop-in art activity making a two dimensional aquarium and other activities for kids.
"We were stoked we can pull this together. Our staff have been putting in volunteer time to make it happen including giving up a Saturday and all the admin work has been pretty intense. Some of our stallholders have got the word out with posters and flyers."
The Art in the Park/Pop-Up Arts Festival is to provide Rotorua a free, family day out event as well as give local artists and makers somewhere they can sell their work.
"We have so much talent here out there and it can be hard for them to compete in a marketplace full of imported goods. The event is run by our community for the community with the emphasis on locally made product."
Face painting will be from 11am-1pm.
