A car has crashed into a power pole in Taupō after a short police chase.

A police spokeswoman said a car failed to stop for police about 9.45am.

After a brief chase police abandoned the pursuit with the car crashing into a power pole at the intersection of Elizabeth St and Terrence St shortly after.

One person has been arrested and any injuries were unknown, she said.

A power company has been notified.
