A woman and a young girl remain in critical condition following a serious crash near Okere Falls.

A Waikato Hospital media spokeswoman said the woman was still in the intensive care unit and the girl had been transferred with critical head injuries to Starship Hospital in Auckland.

The girl is believed to be aged around 4-6, though her exact age is unclear.

Two other children, both under 1, were also transferred to Starship Hospital from Rotorua Hospital last night.

They were among the seven people injured in the crash, which happened around 3pm on State Highway 33 yesterday.

A man is in a serious but stable condition in Rotorua Hospital, while a 4-year-old is in a stable condition in Rotorua Hospital.

The crash was between a van and a people mover in the 70km/h section of the road between Whangamarino School and the Okere Falls Store.

Bay of Plenty road policing manager Inspector Brent Crowe said no further details were available about the cause of the crash.

"It will take a while to determine the factors that led to the crash and the Serious Crash Unit is assessing those factors. It is way too early to contemplate charges."
