Police are still searching for a robber who got away with a "large sum of money" from a local bar.

The offender entered Cheers Bar on Ward Ave in the Rotorua suburb of Fenton Park, near the intersection with Fenton St, about 5.45pm yesterday.

Detective Sergeant Mark Van Kempen of the Rotorua CIB said a lone man went up to a staff member at closing time demanding money.

He described the man as wearing dark clothing, "his face was covered with a black scarf and he was wearing gloves".

"He got away with quite a large sum of money... If anybody notices anybody who has come into money, as it is a noticeable amount, it would be welcome information."

Mr Van Kempen would not say exactly how much was taken, but urged any members of the public with any relevant information to either call the Rotorua police on (07) 349 9400, or anonymously contact Crimestoppers on (0800) 555 111.

Cheers Bar is owned by Copthorne Hotel who could not be reached for comment.
