Police have named the man killed in a Bay of Plenty crash on Sunday.

He was Bharatbhai Patel, 51-year-old.

Mr Patel was from a Rotorua address, police said in a statement this morning.

The man was the sole occupant of a car that had been travelling along Dun Rd, also known as the Kaingaroa straights, towards State Highway 38 when it lost control, left the road and hit a tree.

The Rotorua Fire Brigade was using the jaws of life to cut the man's body from the car.
