A car has crashed into a power pole on State Highway 30, near Awakiri, and power lines are down.

The passenger is still in the vehicle but appears to be doing okay, District Command Centre spokesman Jason Shailer said.

Both lanes of traffic are blocked as emergency services wait for the power company to cut power off to be able to cut the passenger out.

"I don't think it will take too long before the lanes are opened. Once the power company has isolated the powerboard and cut power police will at least open one lane of traffic."
