A woman tourist has died in a head-on crash between Tokoroa and Putaruru.

The crash happened on Waotu Rd, near the intersection with Old Taupo Rd in the South Waikato region.

Acting Senior Sergeant Mike Membery said a woman who was a passenger in a rental car died at the scene.

He said the driver, the woman's husband, was trapped and was treated by emergency services.

Two people in the other car were not hurt.

A rescue helicopter, police, fire and St John Amublance attended.

The crash happened about 6pm.
