About 160 police staff had been deployed for the Waitangi operation and had covered a number of shifts through the day and night.
Ms Robilliard said police iwi liaison officers had been working with people and groups in the community prior to Waitangi Day and that probably contributed to the success of the peaceful celebrations.
"It's been fantastic and very orderly. I do feel sorry for people who set up stalls in this rain," she said.
Ms Robilliard confirmed police had not made an arrests in relation to Waitangi Day celebrations.
Waitangi National Trust chairman Pita Paraone agreed, saying it was the most peaceful Waitangi Day commemorations for many years.
"We have had a very good Waitangi Day commemoration and it's been very, very peaceful and one of the quietest," Mr Paraone said.
He said the only dampener on the big day yesterday was that it was raining.
Treaty of Waitangi e-book
Who said what to whom when the Treaty was negotiated - and what lay behind subsequent misunderstandings about its wording?
In the following extract from her bestselling book The Treaty of Waitangi, Claudia Orange reports in detail on the dramatic events which led to the signing of the Treaty on February 6, 1840.
"An air of excitement hung over the bay. From early in the morning, as groups of Maori moved off towards Waitangi, the bay came alive with canoes paddling from all quarters, each with thirty to forty rowers keeping time to the call and gesture of the kaituki (stroke), who stood to the centre of every canoe. The boats of settlers living round the shores of the bay joined the stream, together with those from vessels at anchor. Most ships were decorated with the flags of their respective nations."
Claudia Orange is a distinguished New Zealand historian best known for her award-winning work, The Treaty of Waitangi.
