A woman had to be airlifted to Rotorua Hospital after becoming ill on a tramp in the Urewera ranges.

Taupo's Greenlea Rescue Helicopter was alerted this morning by the Rescue Co-ordination Centre to a personal locator beacon activation in the area.

The beacon was traced to the Tawhiwhi hut where a 68-year-old woman had spent the night vomiting with abdominal pain.

The woman was one of a group of fifteen mature trampers who were on day two of a four day hike from Ruatahuna to Galatea.

She was taken to Rotorua hospital for further treatment.
