Rotorua Lakes High School student Shanyn Ruthe is captain of the school's 1st XI girls hockey team and this week's Rising Star.
The 17-year-old is also a school prefect and house captain of Tikitapu House.
She achieved NCEA Level 1 endorsed with Merit in 2009, and this year was selected by the New Zealand Army for a specialist future leaders course.
This year Shanyn is a stage challenge leader as well as a peer support leader.
She is also a keen sportswoman and coaches the school's social hockey team as well as being a Bay of Plenty Under-18 hockey representative player.
This year Shanyn was given a free 30-minute flying lesson by the Rotorua Aero Club, which was an experience of a lifetime for her.
Next year she plans to either study sport science at Otago University or join the Army or Air Force as an officer cadet.
