Spectators at this year's Brewers and Liars Festival heard some whoppers,
The annual festival took place at the Ngongotaha Community Hall on Saturday - the fourth time it has been held in Rotorua.
It involves an amateur alcohol brewing contest and a lying competition where people try to outsmart the audience.
The organiser of the liars competition, Jeff Timmins, said it was a really good night.
"We had six good speakers and heard some really good stories."
Auditions were held before the festival to select the six finalists who told a story which the audience then had to decide was true or false. The liars were judged by a panel including comedian Raybon Kan.
Champion liar Jamie Gordon walked away with $300 and a trophy for her tall tale.
"She managed to fool the audience quite well," Mr Timmins said.
Second place went to Annette Bates, who won $200 and third was Campbell Harrison, who walked away with $100.
Festival organiser John Smale said it was a great turnout despite money being tight for most people. About 150 people turned up to hear the tall tales and taste some quirky brews.
The brewing part of the festival included amateurs from Rotorua and elsewhere competing to brew the best beer, wine, spirits and liqueurs. People could taste a brew for $2.
There was also a charity auction hosted by Kan with items donated by businesses in Rotorua and Ngongotaha including a weekend at a hotel for two and car servicing and repair vouchers, all valued at over $50. Money raised will go to Te Whakapono Health Trust to buy electronic tracking devices for Alzheimer's patients.
