Following closure this year, Murupara Kindergarten will re-open next year under a new name.
The kindergarten, which was previously run under the Central North Island Kindergarten Association, was to close in December due to dwindling numbers.
The new kindergarten is expected to begin operating next year with 30 children, aged 2 to 5 years.
Tauranga Region Kindergartens (TRK) has announced Karamuramu as the new name for the kindergarten.
Karamuramu is a hardy shrub that produces lots of fruit - appropriate given the recent drought in the area. The name was also used for a number of marae in pre-European times.
Kindergarten principal Peter Monteith said TRK wanted to re-open the kindergarten as soon as possible next year - as soon as staff could be appointed.
It will open for six hours Monday to Friday and all teachers will be trained and registered.
"A play-group facility will be run for up to three days per week to cater for the pre-schoolers' educational needs during the setting-up period, before teaching staff start," he said.
He praised the work of the local establishment committee.
"Without their vision and hard work the community might have lost a valuable asset."
