A fun family environment will be all the go at Te Amorangi Museum this weekend with miniature steam trains providing all the action.
The Rotorua Society of Model Engineers' open weekend will see miniature steam trains from Auckland, Havelock North, Tauranga and Whakatane giving children and parents the opportunity to take a ride.
Society spokesman John Shelton said the day was a chance for children to see something different.
"It's interesting. It's something kids don't see these days."
He said in the past children had been inquisitive and asked how the steam trains worked.
"They'll ask you 'where does the petrol go?"'
Mr Shelton said seven or eight trains would be on show and he expected between 200 and 300 people to come and have a look over the weekend.
There will also be a sausage sizzle for the visitors.
Mr Shelton said model engineers were a "dying breed" and encouraged anyone interested in model steam trains to come and support the event.
Model engineers are people, usually with electrical engineering backgrounds, who are interested in model engineering.
There are about 12 members in the Rotorua Society of Model Engineers.
Mr Shelton encouraged people to go to the open day after the Santa Parade on Saturday.
"Come out and have a ride on a steam engine," he said.
All funds raised go towards the society and maintaining the train tracks.
Rides cost $2 and are free for children under 5.
The Rotorua Society of Model Engineers Open Weekend is on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm at the Te Amorangi Museum, Robinson Ave, Holdens Bay.
