Creative Ideas Kids Club has held its first art competition as part of the end-of-year exhibition.
Over 100 people turned out to view art works from the 28 students aged between 7 and 12 years old. Local artist Marie White, also known as Mouse, was appointed judge and chose thethree winners - who each received sponsored prizes of Resene paint accompanied by canvas and brushes from Warehouse Stationery.
Riley Lamb, a Year 6 student won a prize for his shadow man sculpture, with Mouse commenting that she enjoyed the tension in the piece with the man standing on one arm.
Shannon Hutching-Bell, a Year 6 student, won for her painting of an illuminated letter S. Mouse was taken with the beauty of the work and the interwoven areas on the letter itself.
Briain Dixon, also Year 6, won his prize for his hessian and wire sculpture of a bear. Mouse commented that she enjoyed the way the bear looked as though he was about to take a step. Special mention was also given to Year 7 student Lana Hutchins, for her watercolour word-picture based on a Paul Klee painting.
Held at the Baptist church building, the display allowed people to view artworks completed over terms 3 and 4 this year. There was a craft table where several of the Kid's Club children instructed visitors on how to make a Christmas angel. A mini fashion show delighted the audience and allowed students to display their T-shirt creation.
After children from the three classes received their certificates and candy canes, Marie Dixon, owner and tutor of Creative Ideas, announced next year's classes. These include new classes for primary and intermediate aged children, as well as new art and craft sessions for adult beginners through to intermediates.
