Armed police scoured the streets in Owhata this afternoon after reports of gunshots in the area but nothing of interest was found.

Police set up cordons, including at the corner of Pohutukawa Drive and Sequoia Cres, and searched the Sunrise Ave area after receiving reports of shots being fired.

A police spokesman said police left the area about 5.30pm having found nothing of interest.

"We did identify a vehicle and did a search but we didn't locate anything."

He said the cordons were set up as a precaution.
