Mum's invention goes worldwide

Cintina Miki believes her new app could become the biggest social networking app in New Zealand.

Miss Miki, 29, has spent the past year-and-a-half working on Cimki, fitting it around a full-time job and raising her daughter.

On January 28, it was released on Apple iOS and has more than 34,000 downloads, proving especially popular in China and Turkey.

A good first attempt for someone with no IT background and no formal qualifications?

"I was expecting more," Miss Miki admitted.

"It's my first time stepping into this arena and I didn't know how to get it out there."

Miss Miki, who was head girl at Murupara's Rangitahi College, worked as a property developer in Sydney for six years before returning to live in Reporoa and work at the Ministry of Social Development in Rotorua.

Then came a conversation that changed her life.

"One day my friend said we should make an app because apparently it makes you lots of money. I thought I am going to do it."

She said she had a clear vision in her head of what she wanted her app to look like.

"It's Facebook meets Instagram meets Trip Advisor ... why do we have to go to three different websites?"

Cimki allows users to upload photos and tag them to locations, rate, review, search and contact businesses.

However it nearly didn't make it past the vision stage.

"I got three quotes [from developers], the highest was $150,000, I thought this is just a dream, no way will I get this off the ground."

Luckily she found a more reasonably-priced developer and Cimki began to take shape.

Yet she kept it quiet, only telling her work colleagues the day before the app was released.

"I didn't really share the dream with anybody. I had it in my back pocket," she said.

"I was so excited the day it was released ... then my friend said 'I know you are on cloud nine but can you help with the laminating machine'. It was back to reality."

She hasn't yet made any money but is confident she will once word spreads about Cimki.

"It could be a massive thing . . . it could be the biggest social networking app in New Zealand."

There are 26 Murupara businesses signed up to Cimki - Miss Miki offered it for free as a way of giving back to the community.

She's also happy to register all schools in the Rotorua district for free for the first year, she said.

Miss Miki said she was committed to making Cimki a success and was in the process of finding a local developer to work with as well as a business mentor to help with marketing and business aspects.

"I want [my daughter] to know you don't have to achieve School C to be able to make something of yourself."

To register your business on Cimki go to partners.cimki.com or download Cimki for free.
