Anglers who turned out at first light to fish renowned Rotorua trout streams have been given a big thumbs up by Fish & Game officers.

With Rotorua streams, including Ngongotaha and Waiteti, opening today for summer fishing, anglers from as far afield as Wellington and Whangarei have been casting out their lines.

Fish & Game officers ranged the waterways to check licences and chat with anglers.

Officer Anthony van Dorp said it was pleasing that by late morning, all the anglers they had spoken to were "fully compliant" on rules, including carrying a current fishing licence.

Of the more than 30 anglers Fish & Game officers encountered, many had caught rainbow trout, some weighing in at 2kg.

Van Dorp said the large browns the area was known for were sighted but "too wily to be caught".
